If you’re looking to jump-start the holiday spirit – with so much going on around the world, who could use a shot in the arm – here’s an event that you don’t have to go too far to attend.

The Lokensgard Blechbaser Brass Ensemble, a group of talented amateur brass players, will be playing a selection of holiday music on the “Delta” at 2 Leonard St. (a block from Town Hall) on Thursday, Dec. 23, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Laura Tracey – she’s the tuba player – said the group consists of between seven to nine members (three from Belmont) who play every week in locations such as Davis Square in Somerville, Arlington Center and Spy Pond.

“Just like an hour at a time, playing some Christmas carols and we’d love to do that in Belmont,” Tracey told the Select Board on Monday. “If you’ll have us, we’d love to play on Thursday afternoon.” The board said yes.

So come down to the center on Thursday, do some last minute shopping and hear the sounds of the season.

Have Yourself A Gusty Little Christmas: High Wind Watch, Possible Outages Over Holidays

Photo: High wind watch this Christmas (Photo credit: DPA)

Santa Claus may show up later than usual Christmas Eve as ol’ St. Nick and his reindeer will be fighting against a nasty Nor’easter about to slam into Belmont and southern New England on Dec. 24 and into Christmas.

The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Watch starting Thursday after dark and lasting through Friday afternoon as a storm heads up the Atlantic coast bringing mild temperatures – highs in the mid-50s Christmas – along with winds between 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 60 mph.

“Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines,” said the NWS in its press release of Dec. 23.

“Widespread power outages are possible” and “[t]ravel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” the statement read.

If the Christmas lights should go dark, call Belmont Light at 617-993-2800 to report the outage. Do not call 911 if losing power is not an emergency.

O’ Tannenbaum, O’ Tannenbaum; It Can Be Left on the Curb Starting Monday

Photo: Goodbye until next year.

Today, Monday, Jan. 4th, is the day before Twelfth Night, which marks the end of the Christmas holiday (it’s the night before Epiphany, the day when the nativity story says the three wise men visited the infant Jesus), which in the past was a time of revelry and merry making.

And with the end of the holiday comes another tradition: the dumping of the family Christmas tree onto the curb.

And starting today, the Belmont Department of Public Works will collect your Christmas trees at the curb for regular trash pickup on the designated trash day during the first two full weeks of January.

For those who like to recycle, the branches can be spread over your garden plot to help protect the soil and provide some shelter for voles and chipmunks.

If you have any questions about ol‘ Tannenbaum, contact the Belmont Public Works at 617-993-2680.
