The Emergency Parking Ban put in place due to Monday’s snowstorm will be lifted at 7 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, according to town officials.

Snowstorm Update

As of Monday afternoon, the Belmont Department of Public Works (DPW) continues around-the-clock snow plowing and removal operations as this winter storm has deposited more than 15 inches of snow across Belmont.

“We are continuing to experience blizzard-like conditions with heavy snow and strong winds of up to 50 mph,” read the message on the town’s website. “This is a serious and ongoing weather event. We urge all residents to take the proper steps to remain safe.”

Trash and Recycling Collection

Since curbside collection was cancelled 0n Monday, trash and recycling pick-up will be delayed by a day for the remainder of the week beginning Tuesday. So if your collection day is Tuesday, it will be pushed up to Wednesday.

Sidewalk Clearing

The town’s residential snow removal bylaw requires sidewalks along residential property to be cleared of snow and ice by 8 p.m. the day after the storm ends. Snow and ice must be cleared or treated to a minimum width of 36 inches.

How You Can Help!

DPW crews and contractors are working to keep Belmont safe and passable. Residents can make a big difference by helping with a few simple steps:

  • Avoid pushing snow into the street. Snow placed back into roadways slows plowing operations and can create hazardous driving conditions. If you hire someone to plow your driveway, we kindly ask that you remind them as well.
  • Keep Vents ClearBe sure to clear snow away from exhaust vents for direct vent gas furnace systems to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Please also check that your carbon monoxide detectors are working properly — carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless, but extremely dangerous.
  • Help Clear Hydrants & Storm Drains If it’s safe to do so, clearing snow from nearby fire hydrants and storm drains greatly supports emergency access and helps prevent flooding as temperatures fluctuate. Our firefighters and DPW crews truly appreciate your help.

Belmont Declares Snow Emergency, Parking Ban On Sunday, In Effect ’til Tuesday, Feb 24

In an attempt to stay one step ahead of a potentially hazardous snowstorm, Belmont has declared a Snow Emergency in effect from Sunday afternoon, Feb. 22 through Tuesday, Feb 24.

The National Weather Service issued a Blizzard Warning Sunday afternoon for most of eastern Massachusetts with heavy snow and strong winds. Forecasts calls for snowfall reaching two feet when the storm passes on Monday night.

The impact on Belmont

● Parking Ban: Starting Sunday Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. and continuing until further notice, Belmont is under a SNOW EMERGENCY PARKING BAN on all roadways, municipal parking lots, and Belmont Public School parking lots. Vehicles parked in violation of the ban will be towed at the owner’s expense.

● Trash and Recycling Collection Delay: There will be NO curbside collection on Monday, Feb. 23. Just like a Monday holiday, trash and recycling collections will be delayed by one day.

● Town Building Closures: All non-emergency Town buildings and offices will be CLOSED on Monday, Feb. 23.

Belmont Public School: All Belmont Public Schools, including school offices and school buildings, will be CLOSED on Monday, Feb. 23. This includes after-school activities and athletics. Read more at

Important Things To Do During The Storm

  • Stay off the roads: Conditions will create hazards for travel; stay home and keep all vehicles off the road. Crews will be out before, during, and after the storm, and we need all roadways clear. In the event of an emergency, please call 911.
  • Charge Devices and Flashlights: Make sure mobile devices, flashlights, and all other necessary equipment are charged ahead of the storm in case of power loss.
  • Clear Hydrants and Storm Drains: After the storm has ended and if it is safe to do so, help clear nearby storm drains and hydrants of snow and ice. This is critical for flood prevention and firefighter access during an emergency.
  • Dryer/Exhaust Vents: Remember to keep all heat exhaust pipes clear of snow for safe circulation.
  • Check on your neighbors: Reach out to your neighbors, friends, and family who may need additional assistance, live alone, or may be nervous to make sure they are safe, prepared, and have what they need.

Belmont Snowstorm Update: Schools Delayed Opening, Parking Ban Lifted, Trash/Recycling Starts Tuesday

After weathering a powerful storm that wreaked havoc across the country and dumped more than 20 inches over Sunday and Monday, Belmont is getting back to business.

The Belmont Department of Public Works reports the Snow Emergency Parking Ban will be lifted at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Trash and recycling collection will begin on Tuesday, with the pickup schedule delayed a day as if Monday was a holiday: If your collection day is Monday this week, it will be picked up on Tuesday, etc.

To the relief of parents, Belmont Public Schools will reopen on Tuesday, but with a two-hour delay.

All town offices – including the Belmont Public Library, the Beech Street Center, and Town Hall – will be up and running Tuesday under normal times of operation.

Effective Saturday night, Feb. 15 at 9 p.m., a SNOW EMERGENCY PARKING BAN on all roadways, municipal, and school parking lots has been announced by the Belmont Police Department. The parking ban will continue until further notice. All vehicles parked in violation of of the parking ban will be towed at the owners expense.

The ban comes as the National Weather Service at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb.15, a Winter Weather Advisory that will remain in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16. The weather event will result in a mix of snow and sleet with accumulations between 2 and 6 inches and ice accumulations between a trace and 0.15 inches.

“Slow down and use caution while traveling,” noted the NWS. “Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.”

“Travel could be nearly impossible,” said the NWS.

Due to the approaching winter storm, the Town Hall and Belmont Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

A snow emergency parking ban on all roadways, as well as in municipal lots and Belmont Public School parking lots, effective at 11:45 p.m. and continuing until further notice. All vehicles parked in violation of the ban will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Trash, recycling, bulk pickups, scheduled cart repairs, and appliance pickups will be delayed a day due to the storm. The town is asking residents to remove carts, appliances, and bulky items from the public way on Tuesday to allow the plows to clear the roadways.

The last day for candidates to submit papers for town office remains Tuesday. Candidates must deliver their nomination papers to the Belmont Police Station, 460 Concord Ave., instead of Town Hall. Those picking up blank nomination forms may collect them from the Police Department. The deadline to submit all signed nomination papers is 5 p.m. Feb. 13.

Trash and recycling will be picked up per the regular schedule on Tuesday.

Belmont Town Hall and other town offices will open at 9 a.m.

Snow Emergency Starts Thursday Night; Town Buildings Closed Friday; Friday Trash Pickup Delayed

With a foot of snow ready to be dumped on the heads of residents, the town of Belmont has declared a snow emergency effective Thursday, Feb. 24 at 11:45 p.m. until the town says otherwise.

A parking ban will also be in effect for all roadways and municipal and school parking lots. If the town finds your vehicle in said areas, it will be towed at your expense.

Due to the expected inclement weather and unsafe road conditions, Belmont town offices and the Belmont Public Library will be closed on Friday, Feb. 25.

And due to the Presidents Day holiday, if your usual trash and recycling pick-up day of Thursday was pushed back a day, the snowstorm will give you the distinction of having your stuff removed on Saturday. The Department of Public Works is asking residents to keep barrels off the streets and sidewalk on Friday until the snow is removed. And be sure the trash and recycling is ready to go at 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26.

Belmont has issued a Snow Emergency Parking Ban effective at 6 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 7 at 6 a.m. on all roadways, as well as in municipal parking lots and Belmont Public School parking lots. The ban will be in effect until further notice. 

All vehicles parked in violation of the ban will be towed at the owner’s expense. 

In addition, town offices, the Belmont Public Library and the Beech Street Center will close on Friday.

Snow Emergency 2.0: Second Parking Ban In A Week Starts Noon, Sunday

For the second time in a week, the town of Belmont has issued a Snow Emergency Parking Ban due to what the National Weather Service is calling a “quick hitting” snow storm that could produce up to an inch of snow an hour at the height of the nor’easter.

The ban begins at noon, Sunday, Feb. 7 and will last until further notice. Parking is prohibited on roadways, municipal and school parking lots. Vehicles in violation may be towed.

The NWS Boston station, which issued a Winter Weather Advisory, reported the winter storm will bring accumulating snow to much of southern New England Sunday. Snowfall may be heavy at times and cause hazardous travel.

The latest information as of 3:34 a.m. Sunday has the snow beginning before noon and lasting until 10 p.m. to midnight with up to six inches of snow on the way.

The Belmont Department of Public Works reports the snow emergency parking ban has been lifted as of 9:45 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2 (Groundhog Day).

After the end of the snow fall, the Office of Community Development reminds residents the town’s residential snow removal bylaw requires sidewalks along residential property be cleared of snow and ice by 8 p.m. the day after a storm ends. With regards to last night’s storm, snow and ice should be cleared or treated from sidewalks to a width of at least 36 inches by 8 p.m. tomorrow night, Wednesday Feb. 3.
