On the government side of “This Week”: 

• The Belmont Board of Selectmen is holding an abbreviated “working session” for procedural action at 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 5 in Town Hall. 
• The Zoning Board of Appeals will meet in the Belmont Gallery of Art on the third floor of the Homer Building in the Town Hall complex on Monday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. to discuss a special permit for a child care business on Sycamore Street.
• The Belmont School Committee is meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Chenery Middle School. The evening begins a half hour earlier as the district honors educators who are granted professional status. There will also be stuff about budgets, enrollment, future plans and food services. 
• The Recreation Commission will discuss the past shortened season and whether to raise residential fees in the 2016 Underwood Pool season, review the tennis court study and discuss the proposed skating rink at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Town Hall.
• The Warrant Committee will take up its pension report at its meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 7:30 p.m. at the Chenery Middle School.

• The Belmont Crew Club is holding its board meeting in the Flett Room of the Belmont Public Library on Monday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.

• State Rep. Dave Rogers will host office hours at the Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St., at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

• Performed by actors Richard Clark and Lynne McKenney Lydick, “Two to Tango” is a pair of theatrical scenes that takes the audience on a bittersweet tour of life, love and love lost. From the dark and stormy war of passion and will in the 12th century realm of England’s King Henry II, to a contemporary clash of bi-coastal emotional cultures, scenes from James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter and Neil Simon’s Visitor from New York, remind us of the strange and unexpected forms love can take and uplift us with the message that love, even bruised and broken, remains a splendid thing. This free performance takes place Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 1:15 p.m. at the Beech Street Center. Supported by a grant from the Belmont Cultural Council.

• Tuesday is Wii Game Night at the Beech Street Center. This Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 4 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., enjoy sports from the comfort of your senior center, rain or shine! Wii is a motion-activated video game console with baseball, golf, archery and more games are available. You can get a workout depending on how hard and how long you play. Beginners welcome.

• The ‘Tween Tuesday Book Discussion Group is holding a Rick Riordan Party on Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Belmont Public Library’s Flett Room on the release of Riordan’s latest book, The Sword of Summer. We’ll talk all things Percy Jackson, Greek mythology and Norse mythology.  Familiarity with the Percy Jackson books is helpful, but not necessary. • The Belmont Board of Selectmen is meeting Monday, Sept 28 in Town Hall at 7 p.m. to hear from the MBTA on the Waverley Square Commuter Rail station and to vote on the “Town Green” design as part of the Belmont Center Reconstruction Project/
• The Belmont School Committee will hear updates on facilities such as a new field house, workout room, softball field and rec center along with information on the iPads in the school at its meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Chenery Middle School.
• The Belmont Municipal Light Board is meeting at 8 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 30, in Town Hall is discuss and possibly vote on the buyback subsidy proposal submitted by the Temporary Net Metering Working Advisory Group.
• The Warrant Committee will vote on officers and discuss what it has done so far on pensions at its 7:30 p.m. meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Chenery Middle School. 
• The Capital Budget Committee is meeting on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. at Town Hall to discuss the proposed Skating Rink/Field House and other capital projects.

• It’s an Early-Release Wednesday for the six Belmont Public Schools on Wednesday, Sept. 30. 

• Chenery Middle School students are invited on early release Wednesday to head over to the library’s Assembly Room on Wednesday. Sept 30 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., to do your homework while enjoying some hot chocolate. This is for middle schoolers only so high schoolers are on their own. This event is provided for free, thanks to the Friends of the Belmont Public Library.

• Boston West Fair Skies, a group that is fighting RNAV narrow flight paths flown by airplanes using GPS, will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Belmont Public Library’s Assembly Room. All are welcome to attend.

• Storytime for 1’s for walkers and toddlers under 24 months will take place Thursday, Oct. 1, at 10:30 a.m. in the Belmont Public Library’s Flett Room, sharing simple stories, songs, and nursery rhymes and end with time to play.

• The LEGOs Club is back at the Belmont Public Library! If you love building with LEGOs, this program is for you. Kids in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade will build with our LEGOs and we’ll put all the creations on display in the Children’s Room. The fun begins Thursday, Oct. 1, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the library’s Assembly Room.

• The Friends of Belmont Public Library Author Series presents Dr. Craig Malkin who will speak on “Rethinking Narcissism: The Bad – and Surprising Good – About Feeling Special” on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the library’s Assembly Room. In this book, Malkin offers a radically new model for understanding the often misused term narcissism, which argues Malkin, is essentially a spectrum of self-importance. Malkin was a chief psychologist at Harvard Medical School’s Cambridge Hospital. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

• Literacy Playgroup is a parent and child group that supports child’s language and literacy development on Friday, Oct. 2, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Flett Room. You’ll play, read, sing and take home new ideas. Presented by educators from the CFCE grant program; for children age 4 and under.

• The Beech Street Center is holding a free Fire Safety Quick Check on Friday, Oct. 2 at 1:15 p.m. Join Belmont Fire Department Firefighter Ross Vona to learn how to run a quick check of your smoke detectors at home. Bring your other fire safety questions: How often should you check your smoke alarms? When were they last replaced?

• In her talk, “Add a Little Color to Your Life,” at the Beech Street Center on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 1:15 p.m., Maralin Manning will help participants understand how and why your color decisions are so important. Manning, a graduate of Mass. College of Art, is a former fashion director of Jordan Marsh Company and currently serves on the faculty of the Fashion Department at Mount Ida College.

• Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement which is the holiest day of the year in Judaism, begins at sunset, Tuesday, Sept. 22 until nightfall, Sept. 23. Belmont Schools are closed on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

• The autumnal equinox – the beginning of the fall season – happens on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 4:21 a.m. The word equinox means “equal night”; night and day are about the same length of time.

The board will vote on a possible sale of the municipal parking lot in Cushing Square to all for the construction of Cushing Village and discussing the recommendation from the Special Town Meeting urging the board to adopt the original design for the Belmont Center Reconstruction Project.
• The School Committee along with School Administrators will meet after its annual summer retreat at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the School Administration Building at 644 Pleasant St. Lots of talks of strategic plans, logistics and school committee goals for the coming year.

• The Conservation Commission is meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at Town Hall to go over a request of the Harvard Running Club for a cross country meet at Rock Meadow on Sept. 26 and discuss possible projects in which funds could be obtained through an Community Preservation Committee grant.
• The Net Metering Working Group will be meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 4 and Aug 5 at 7 p.m. in Town Hall as it hammers away reviewing the financial model to assist a solar tariff design.
• Special Town Meeting takes on Thursday, Aug 6, at 7 p.m. in the air conditioned comfort of the Chenery Middle School auditorium. The meeting was called by the Board of Selectmen as a result of a citizens’ petition submitted by Paul Roberts (Precinct 8) and Bonnie Friedman (Precinct 3).

• It’s illusion and singing on the front lawn of the Belmont-Watertown Methodist Church as the church sponsors the 15th annual Magic and Song on the Lawn on Monday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. Head lighting the night will be magician Mike Bent’s “Abrakidabra” Magic Show and children’s singer Paul Sedgwick. It’s free and lots of fun.

• The Beech Street Center presents The Ambassadors – Joseph Vincent and Joseph Andrea – who will bring the music of the Big Band-era to the Center on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 1:15 p.m. Vincent was a finalist in a world piano-accordion competition. Joseph Andrea is a multi-instrumentalist and WW II veteran who, at the end of the war, was asked to form a seven-piece dance band to entertain wounded G.I.s, enlisted men, and officers. He played in various symphonies including the Boston Civic Symphony and the New England Symphony.

• This week’s screen of the “Chillin’ with Villains, Marvel movie” series is the latest version of the “Amazing Spiderman” (the one with Emma Stone and the English guy made in 2012) Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library. 

• At the Belmont Public Library’s “Superhero Extravaganza” for kindergarteners and elementary school students, kids can test their superhero skills with games, crafts and more as they develop their own superhero alter ego on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. Superhero costumes encouraged.

• The John Baboian Ensemble with vocalist Sandi Bedrosian will bring jazz standards and original tunes to the Payson Park Music Festival on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6:30 p.m. (note the earlier start time in August). 

• On Thursday, Aug. 6 at 10:30 a.m., Bonnie Duncan presents “Lollipops for Breakfast” in which Sylvia will discover a magical world on her quest to have lollipops for breakfast. This is a silly puppet adventure created and performed by Duncan. For all ages (including you adults)

• Join the Belmont Public Library for a pre-release book presentation with Daniel Korschun and Grant Welker, authors of “We Are Market Basket: The story of the unlikely grassroots movement that saved a beloved business” on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Assembly Room. The presentation will be followed by Q&A and discussion. • Yoga for Everyone at the Beech Street Center on Tuesday, July 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.: join Susan Harris, a registered yoga teacher and associate professor of Nutrition at Tufts University for this Iyengar-inspired class which practices yoga postures slowly and with attention to alignment and safety, adapted to the abilities and needs of individual students. Practice is done with bare feet; mats and props are provided. • I … Am …Ironman! This week’s Chillin’ with Villains movie series at the Belmont Public Library is the very first ‘Iron Man’ movie with Robert Downey Jr. Beat the heat in the library’s Assembly Room at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 28. There will be popcorn! No sign-up is necessary. All are welcome.

• The Hampstead Stage presents the tale of our favorite redistributor of wealth, Robin Hood, in a presentation of the outlaw, his merry men and the dastardly Sheriff of Nothingham on Wednesday, July 29 at 3 p.m, in the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library. It will be full of action, brave heroics, bumbling villains, and participation from the audience! This is a presentation for kindergarteners to fourth graders.

• For the second year, the Belmont Community Summer Band, led by Belmont Public School Director of Fine and Performing Arts Arto Asadoorian, will be highlighting the Payson Park Music Festival on Wednesday, July 29, at 6:45 p.m. The band, filled with residents, students and alum, will play music from the movie “Frozen” and band standards.

• Award-winning local musician Alastair Moock brings his rowdy, rootsy, singing, dancing, family-fun-filled live show at the Belmont Public Library’s Assembly Room on Thursday, July 30 at 10:30 a.m.! For those 2 to 5 year olds.

On the government side of the week: 

• The Planning Board will meet on Tuesday, July 21, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall where it will discuss a new house’s design at 1 Clark Lane and will review a series of plans required for the construction of Cushing Village. 
• The Community Path Implementation Advisory Committee will be reviewing the challenges of placing a community path in Belmont on Wednesday, July 22, at 6 p.m. in Town Hall. 

• Summertime Pre-School Story Time at the Benton Library, Belmont’s independent and volunteer run library, at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 21. Stories and crafts for children age 3 to 5. Parents or caregivers must attend. Siblings may attend with adults. Registration is not required. The Benton Library is located at the intersection of Oakley and Old Middlesex.

• US Rep. Katherine Clark is holding office hours at the Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St., on Tuesday, July 21, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

• Mary Poppins Sing-Along (with lyrics) will be the Noon movies for children on Tuesday, July 21, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library. 

• The Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St., will present “Revere Beach Then & Now Slide Show” on Tuesday, July 21, at 1:15 p.m. The presentation will include more than 100 beautiful images of historic Revere Beach and its glorious past. Once again be thrilled to recall the special memories that we share of Rotherhams Red Indian popcorn, Moxie, Korr Bros. Frozen Custard, and, of course, Kelley’s Roast Beef. Many will also remember the wonderful Big Band music always heard at the dance halls of Revere Beach such as the Oceanview Ballroom, Ocean Pier, or the Frolic nightclub.

• In his show “Bubbleology,” Keith Michael Johnson will build beautiful creations out of bubbles with enthusiasm, humor and style in the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library on Wednesday, July 22, at 2 p.m. One moment he will be encasing a dinosaur in a bubble and the next he’s encapsulating an audience volunteer! For kindergarteners to fourth grade.

• It is the final three concerts of the summer by the Music on the Hill (MOTH) students will be Wednesday through Friday, July 22-24, at 6:30 pm, at the Powers Music School, 404 Concord Ave. Wednesday and Thursday will be the MOTH Orchestra, with Jazz, Fiddle on Friday.

• The nation’s premier tribute to U2, The Joshua Tree, will once again grace the stage of the Payson Park Music Festival as this week’s featured artist beginning at 6:45 p.m., Wednesday, July 22, at Payson Park Playground at Payson Road and Elm Street.

• The Chillin’ With Villains Movie Series begins Tuesday, July 21, at 6:30 p.m. with The Avengers (2012) at the Belmont Public Library’s Assembly Room. 

• Musician Matt Heaton plays kid-friendly folk music and surf-inspired original songs on Thursday, July 23 at 10:30 a.m. For ages 2 to 5.

• It’s OTAKUrabu at the Belmont Public Library. Watch anime, do a craft/activity, plan for future events and nibble on some Japanese snacks (while they last – they’ll go fast) on Thursday, July 23, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. in the Assembly Room. Provided free, thanks to the Friends of the Belmont Public Library. Just drop in, no registration required.
