Belmont Schools, Library Closed Friday Due To Winter Storm, Hazardous Roads

While it’s not a snow day, Belmont public school students will be sleeping in Friday as school has been cancelled due to bad winter weather.

“Due to the storm and the projected flash freezing of roads, Belmont Public Schools are closed on Friday, February 4, 2022,” reported John Phelan, superintendent of schools on Thursday.

The Belmont Public Library will also be closed on Friday.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 4 a.m. on Feb. 4, until 7 p.m. for eastern Massachusetts. The forecast calls for rain changing to freezing rain and sleet between 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. impacting the morning commute as roads become hazardous as surfaces will be impacted by flash freeze as temperatures drop into the 20s by late Friday morning.

The National Weather Service in Boston issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27 until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28 warning of freezing rain with ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch of a light glaze coating sidewalks and roadways in Belmont and throughout Massachusetts.

The NWS calls for residents to plan plan on slippery road conditions that could impact the Tuesday morning commute.

“Slow down and use caution while traveling,” the service advises.

Snow Emergency 2.0: Second Parking Ban In A Week Starts Noon, Sunday

For the second time in a week, the town of Belmont has issued a Snow Emergency Parking Ban due to what the National Weather Service is calling a “quick hitting” snow storm that could produce up to an inch of snow an hour at the height of the nor’easter.

The ban begins at noon, Sunday, Feb. 7 and will last until further notice. Parking is prohibited on roadways, municipal and school parking lots. Vehicles in violation may be towed.

The NWS Boston station, which issued a Winter Weather Advisory, reported the winter storm will bring accumulating snow to much of southern New England Sunday. Snowfall may be heavy at times and cause hazardous travel.

The latest information as of 3:34 a.m. Sunday has the snow beginning before noon and lasting until 10 p.m. to midnight with up to six inches of snow on the way.

Belmont Under Winter Weather Advisory ‘Til New Year’s Eve Morning

A large part of eastern Massachusetts including Belmont has been placed under a Winter Weather Advisory starting at 10:26 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28 and lasting until 7 a.m. Tuesday, New Year’s Eve.

The National Weather Service issued an “urgent” message Sunday that the impacted area will receive about an inch of mixed precipitation of snow and sleet along with a light glazing of ice producing hazardous conditions including slippery road conditions that could impact Monday’s morning or evening commute.

During the advisory, winds will gust as high as 35 m.p.h. buffering the Massachusetts coast. High winds could damage trees causing electrical outages. Below are telephone numbers to keep at the ready when the lights go out:

Belmont Under Winter Weather Advisory; 3″ to 6″ of Snow Expected

Well, at least it was a nice morning.

The National Weather Service in Taunton issued a winter weather advisory in effect from noon today, Tuesday, Jan. 31 to 4 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 1 as the service is predicting up to half a foot of snow blanketing Belmont and most of the state when the storm ends around noon Wednesday.

Snow is expected to develop in the afternoon starting off as a brief period of heavy snow in early evening, falling at an inch an hour. The snow will taper off overnight. 

As of 10 a.m., Tuesday, Belmont has not issued a snow emergency.

Icy Roads, Hazardous Conditions Greet Commuters Tuesday Morning, Afternoon

Ice-covered roads along with a wintry mix of snow and sleet will greet commuters Tuesday morning and later in the afternoon, Dec. 29, as the first blast of winter, hits Belmont and Eastern Massachusetts, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service in Taunton.

The service issued a winter weather advisory at 10:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28 that will last until 1 p.m. Tuesday, resulting in hazardous travel conditions as a mix of snow and sleet coats streets and highways before dawn with a layer of an icy slush on untreated roadways.

While conditions will improve in the early afternoon as temperatures rise, streets will once again become slippery in the afternoon as a cold front comes through the Boston area, warns the service.

The snow will fall around midnight and continue to 4 a.m., turning to snow and sleet with the accumulation of around an inch possible. 
Rain, snow, and sleet will end before 7 a.m., then turning to rain and sleet between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., then rain after 10 a.m. High near 36. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. 
Rain showers are likely before 9 p.m., then a chance of freezing drizzle between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.
