With the largest snowstorm in several year barreling towards eastern Massachusetts, Belmont has set a snow emergency parking ban beginning at 10 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, according to a text message from the Belmont Police. The parking prohibited on public roadways, municipal and school parking lots will continue into Sunday and will be in effect until further notice.
Vehicles in violation of the ban may be towed.
“The parking ban makes it easier for our DPW workers to clear your street and all town/school parking lots. We appreciate your cooperation!”
There will be no school related activities on Sunday, Feb. 9.
The Natioinal Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for eastern Massachusetts beginning at 7 p.m., Saturday before ending at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9. Heavy snow is expected with widespread total snow accumulations between 5 to 9 inches. The heaviest snow will fall between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. with snow fall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour at times. Snow may mix with freezing drizzle before ending Sunday morning, according to the NWS.
Belmont’s Office of Planning and Building reminds property owners that the town’s residential snow removal bylaw requires sidewalks along residential property to be cleared of snow and ice by 8 p.m. the day after a storm ends. Snow and ice should be cleared or treated from sidewalks to a width of at least 36 inches. We appreciate your attention to this very important public safety matter.
