It’s a busy, busy weekend in Belmont and it all start’s Friday:

• Broadway Night 2014, the annual musical theater cabaret featuring the talents of the students of the Belmont High School Performing Arts Company, will raise the curtain on two shows, Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater at Belmont High School. The show, which includes solos, duets, and full company numbers, has become a wonderful tradition that opens the PAC season each year. Tickets $12 adults, $5 students.

• The annual Friends of the Belmont Public Library Book Sale begins on Friday, Oct. 17 with a sale for Superfriends and Benefactors. It will be open to the public on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Hardbacks and good paperbacks are $1.50, Coffee tables are $3, Cookbooks $3 while all children books are 50 cents. Come Sunday and fill a bag of books for some ridiculously cheap price. 

• The annual Belmont/Watertown United Methodist Church Pumpkin Fair takes place Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the front lawn of church at 421 Common St., one block from Cushing Square. Food, pumpkin decorating, crafts, games, bounces, a bake sale along with a mega yard sale.

• On Saturday, Oct. 18, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., The Belmontian Club will partner with Belmont Car Wash in its annual fundraiser for Belmont High School’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” team. The club, whose members will be out there drying vehicles, will receive all tips for the day and $1 per car for Belmont Car Wash.

• A rare Saturday afternoon game for the Belmont High School Boys’ Soccer team as the playoff-bound Marauders (9-3-2) take on the Tanners from Woburn High at Harris Field on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m.

• Head over to the Charles River and witness the largest rowing event in the world, the 50th Head of the Charles. The Arlington-Belmont Crew boys’ and girls’ Eights will be on the water, along with 10,500 other rowers, on Sunday, Oct. 18; the boys’ from 10:10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., the girls’ from 12:45 p.m. to 1:10 p.m.

• Celebrate the Powers Music School’s 50th anniversary by participating in the season’s first Belmont Open Sings: “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Church in Belmont, Unitarian Universalist, 404 Concord Ave.. The chorus will be accompanied by two pianos and percussion with feature singers from Musica Sacra and area choirs. $10 per person; No reservations needed.

• Rolie Polie Guacamole, Brooklyn’s hippest “kindie” band, brings their high-energy show to Belmont to kick off the Public Library’s Children’s Room Saturday Sing-Along Series beginning on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 10:30 a.m. The band will rock original songs and unique covers of classic songs. Check out the band’s big hit: “Red Light Green Light (Time For Hummus).”

• Due to the Rosh Hashanah holiday, this week’s Belmont High School Football game will return to its traditional Saturday afternoon game time as the Marauders travel to neighboring Lexington High School on Sept. 27 for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. In addition, Belmont Boys’ Soccer will host Somerville at 10 a.m. at Harris Field while Field Hockey also travels to Lexington to meet the Minutemen at 11 a.m.

• The Belmont Auxiliary Police and the US Drug Enforcement Agency will host a prescription drug Take-Back Initiative at the town’s DPW yard, 37 C St., on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• It’s a good weekend to get that long-delayed flu shot.

• The First Church in Belmont’s Second Friday Coffeehouse concert series presents “An Evening with Richard Curzi and Positive Energy” on Friday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m. at 404 Concord Ave. Curzi, First Church’s own keyboardist and singer, returns to the Second Friday Coffeehouse for the 13th time, performing both sets in a variety of musical configurations guaranteed to delight lovers of all music genres. This year’s show will be an all “unplugged” acoustic performance of an unconventionally eclectic mix of original songs, nostalgic pop, jazz, and folk styles. Admission is $10 with students and seniors $5.

• The Senior Book Discussion Group will meet on Friday, June 13 at 11 a.m. at the Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St., will continue our discussion of “Sons and Lovers” by D.H. Lawrence (Chapter 8 through the end of the book).

• Three Belmont swimmers will be participating in the annual Cambridge Synchro Swans Show, a demonstration of synchronized swimming taking place on Saturday, June 14 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the War Memorial Pool at 1640 Cambridge St., a stone throw from Harvard Square. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors with family tickets are $20. 

Juliette Saint-Ourens (on the 13 to 15 Intermediate Team and Trio) Quinn Maniona and Avery Williams (who are on the 13 to 15 Novice Team 1) will take part performing their routines along with lift and “throw” demonstrations. Maniona and Williams’ team took first place in the yearly novice/intermediate meet while Saint-Ourens qualified to swim at the East Zone Championships in Connecticut earlier this month. 

• An exhibit of artist Susan Schneider’s oil painting landscapes of New England, the Southwest and Coastal California can be viewed this weekend at the Mass Audubon Habitat, 10 Juniper Rd. Saturday and Sunday hours vary so call ahead at 617-489-5050.

• The 13th annual Brendan’s Home Run 5K race & walk is being held on Fathers’ Day, Sunday, June 15 with the 5K Charity Walk beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the road race commencing at 10 a.m. There will also be a 400 meter/800 meter youth races for kids 6 to 12. On-site entry fee on Father’s Day morning is $25. There is no charge for the 400/800m youth races.

• Join Belmont Food Collaborative, the parent organization of the Belmont Farmers’ Market, and Sustainable Belmont for Organic Gardening Coffee Hour ‘Beyond the Privet: How to Safely Grow & Thrive in Your Belmont Yard!’ on Saturday, June 7 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library. Hear short presentations from experienced Belmont gardeners, then share questions and best practices on the topics of the morning:

•       Common weeds and how to safely remove them
•       Companion plants for vegetable/fruit gardens
•       Integrated edibles with typical decorative plantings
•       Basics of home composting or worm composting

This is a free talk and open to the public; all experience levels are welcome!

• Stop by the Benton Library, Belmont’s independent and volunteer library at the corner of Old Middlesex and Oakley, on your way home or after dinner as the library will be open from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, June 6. Use their wi-fi connection, browse the collection including the New York Times best sellers and purchase some of the reasonably priced sale books; all proceeds benefit the library. The Benton is open on the first Friday evening of every month.
