Belmont Open Sing: Handel’s ‘Utrecht Te Deum’ Sunday, March 31, 7:30

Beginner and experienced singers are invited to join the Powers School of Music to the age of Queen Anne (depicted in the film, “The Favourite”) for the second Belmont Open Sings event of the season, George Frederick Handel’s “Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate,” on Sunday, March 31, 7:30 p.m., at Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont St.

Come participate in performances of the great masterworks for chorus and orchestra. Experience the thrill of singing your favorite works accompanied by a professional-level orchestra, and revel in arias sung by some of Boston’s finest soloists, led by Artistic Director Mary Beekman. First timers are welcome. Vocal scores and a choral warm-up are provided.

Tickets: $10 per person; No reservations needed. All ages welcome, and we encourage you to bring your family and friends to enjoy these masterpieces together

“Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate” is a sacred choral composition written by Handel to celebrate the Treaty of Utrecht, which established the Peace of Utrecht in 1713, ending the War of the Spanish Succession. 

Learn About Music Whatever Your Age, Skills At Powers’ Workshop Week

A big event is happening beginning today, Monday, Oct. 29 and running through Saturday, Nov. 3 as the Powers Music  School is holding its first Workshop Week.

Taught by local and regional teaching artists, the workshops bring accessible music and arts programs right to the public, and provide a fun way to learn about music.

“We are offering 50-plus workshops that cost only $5 each (or free for registered Powers families) and there is truly something for everyone,” said Kelly Webber, Director of Marketing & Communications for the school, located at 396/380 Concord Ave.

Whether you’re new to music or already play an instrument, are young or old, there is a class for everyone.

This Weekend: Hedy’s in the Homer House Sunday, Movement in Music Saturday

• Belmont’s Powers Music School is presenting a Dalcroze Eurhythmics Showcase on Saturday, May 2, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, at the corner of Clark and Common  streets. Dalcroze Eurhythmics teaches concepts of rhythm, structure, and musical expression using movement, and is the concept for which Dalcroze is best known.

• The Belmont Woman’s Club will present a benefit performance of “Hedy Lamarr — Tinseltown Inventor” at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, in the club’s headquarter’s, the Homer House, at the corner of Pleasant Street and Concord Avenue.

Actor and writer Judith Kalaora portrays the Hollywood legend from the 1930s to the 1950s, bringing to audiences the story of a glamorous film actress whose genius for invention was generations ahead of her time.

Admission of $35 per person includes an actor’s reception following the performance. Proceeds support the maintenance of the Homer House, listed on the State Register of Historic Places and also on the National Register as part of Belmont’s Pleasant Street Historic

This Weekend: Benton Open House Saturday, A-B Chamber Chorus on Sunday

• The Benton Library, Belmont’s independent library located at Oakley and Old Middlesex, is holding it’s annual Open House on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Join the board of directors and volunteer staff to celebrate the season. Everyone in the community is welcomed to attend and anyone who hasn’t tried the Benton is urged to stop by.

• Students from Belmont’s Powers Music School are performing  their winter recitals with a holiday theme as they tour the area. They will be performing at the Watertown Mall, 550 Arsenal St. in Watertown on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come early as the group will be a special holiday music story at 2 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 7 at 1:30 p.m., the group heads to the Mall at Chestnut Hill in Newton.

• The Belmont Hill School’s Winter Concert will take place in Hamilton Chapel on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. Performing will be the school’s orchestra, jazz band, piano trio and the Belmont Hill B-Flats, the senior choral group, as well as the 9th grade’s A-Sharps. The concert is open to the public. 

• The Arlington-Belmont Chamber Chorus under conductor Barry Singer presents NOT-QUITE-WINTER CONCERT on Sunday, Dec. 7, beginning at 3 p.m. at Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont St. The concert will consist of six masses each from a different century and songs of poets over five hundred years. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for 17 years old and younger.

2014 Belmont Open Sings: Carl Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’

Celebrate the Powers Music School’s 50th anniversary by participating in the season’s first Open Sings: “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff. The chorus will be accompanied by two pianos and percussion with feature singers from Musica Sacra and area choirs. The sing takes place on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Church in Belmont, Unitarian Universalist, 404 Concord Ave.

Tickets: $10 per person; No reservations needed.
